When I was young it seemed that life was so wonderful

I lived in the greatest country in the world. We had rights, and our government was answerable to US. We had privacy, we had ownership, we had all we needed, and much of what we "wanted".

Far away, on another continent, there was a land where people were spied upon by their government. Where they could be arrested for speaking their minds, and where they were held without lawyers, without bail, without trials - for years.

In that far-away country, people didn't live well, they wore sad, patched, broken-down clothing, stood in lines for food, and didn't even have any toilet paper. People were not allowed to travel without permission from the government. They did not have the right to vote.

Corrupt and evil politicians grew fat and wealthy on the backs of the oppressed "masses".

Abraham Lincoln was held up as an example of all that was good for us - "Government OF the people, BY the people, FOR the people".

Today I feel like crying, after reading the usual blogs.

There is a reason we have such an immigration problem, beyond the cheap labor market. This is still the greatest place on earth to live.

How long it remains that way......

I'm not so sure of that, but they did teach us that when we were young and we do tend to believe our teachers.

But we have jumped into the future and now there are country's just as good to live in, if not better than this one.

In fact there are other country's I have seriously considered moving to. But I'll stick it out here, no matter how bad it gets I won't have it to bad.

BTW, the Roman's thought they had the greatest empire in the world at the time also. And as I've said before, that empire was reborn here, and it to shall crumble.

So be it.....

BBC, the Romans did have the greatest empire in the world. Certainly it was the most impacting. But like everything else, nothing lasts forever. Thats called change.

Dictating what countries are better to live in than others is subjective. All countries have issues. It all comes down to ones tolerance of idiocy and BS.

On a more personal note, no one will cry if you decide to relocate to Upper Volta BBC.

Ummm. I guess a lot of people think that about their own country, don't they? I certainly do, but then again, the word "greatest" is so subjective isn't it?

That's a very good point about the reversal of positions with the (former) USSR though. Change isn't always for the better, that's for sure.
